How Romantic! The New 8 Wonders of the World...

Surely, you've heard of the seven wonders of the world, right? But did you know that only one of the original ancient "seven wonders" still exists? (The Pyramids at Giza, Egypt).

Well, in 1999, Swiss adventurer Bernard Weber launched a campaign to name 7 Modern Wonders of the World. Almost 200 nominations came in, and the list was narrowed to the 21 most-voted by the start of 2006.

The finalists were then voted on in a global poll. About 100 million votes were cast by the Internet and cellphone text messages, said New7Wonders, the nonprofit organization that conducted the poll. Weber's Switzerland-based foundation aims to promote cultural diversity by supporting, preserving and restoring monuments.

And the winners are:

1. The Great Wall of China

2. Rome's Colosseum

3. India's Taj Mahal

4. Jordan's Petra

5. Peru's Machu Picchu

6. Brazil's Statue of Christ Redeemer

7. Mexico's Chichen Itza pyramid

Oops! The Giza pyramids were left off the list! Egyptian officials were highly insulted by this, so they were assured by the foundation of retaining their status in addition to the new seven. So, that makes 8...

Some of the nominated landmarks which lost out included: the Eiffel Tower, Easter Island in the Pacific, the Statue of Liberty, the Acropolis, Russia's Kremlin and Australia's Sydney Opera House, Cambodia's Angkor, Spain's Alhambra, Turkey's Hagia Sophia, Japan's Kiyomizu Temple, Russia's Kremlin and St. Basil's Cathedral, Germany's Neuschwanstein Castle, Britain's Stonehenge and Mali's Timbuktu.

The traditional seven wonders were concentrated in the Mediterranean and Middle East. That list was derived from lists of marvels compiled by ancient Greek observers. Besides the Giza pyramids, they included: The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, the Colossus of Rhodes and the Pharos lighthouse off Alexandria. They have all vanished.

A new version of the Seven Wonders of the World has been drawn up, based on over 100 million votes cast from people in 200 countries.

Taj Mahal, new Seven Wonders of the World
The Taj Mahal has been voted as one of the new World Wonders

The winners were announced on July 7, and include the Great Wall of China, Machu Picchu in Peru and the Taj Mahal in India.

The winners, based on an online poll by New 7 Wonders of the World, were announced during a ceremony in Lisbon, attended by American actress Hilary Swank, pop star Jennifer Lopez and tenor Jose Carreras.

The vote, which was drawn from 21 contenders, attracted some cristicism, including from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), which said last week that the new wonders of the world should not be chosen in a popular vote.

Other contenders included the Great Pyrmaid of Giza (the only remaining wonder of the ancient world), the Acropolis in Athens, the Eiffel Tower, Ankor in Cambodia and the Moai statues of Easter Island.

The new Seven Wonders in full are:

Chichén Itzá, Mexico

Christ the Redeemer, Brazil

The Great Wall, China

Machu Picchu, Peru

Petra, Jordan

The Roman Colosseum, Italy

The Taj Mahal, India
