Questions & Answers about Amber

Is it OK to wear the necklace 24/7 including when asleep?

We recommend you take the necklace off whenever your baby doesn't have supervision.

 Will water damage the necklace?

We recommend you avoid extended contact with water. With prolonged exposure the thread may become brittle.

When is it safe for my baby to wear the necklace?

The necklace may be worn from birth onwards, or as soon as the baby starts teething or showing any signs of pain or discomfort from teething.

How long will my necklace last?

The teething necklaces are specifically designed for use with babies and are therefore extremely durable. With the right care, one necklace will last and become a treasured heirloom to pass down in the family.

My baby wants to chew on the necklace, is this OK?

It will not cause any harm to the child, however the necklace is made for wearing, not for chewing. The easiest solution is to tuck it under their clothing and the necklace will quickly assume body temperature and the child will ignore it. You should use other teething aids such as chewing rings to meet your baby's increased chewing needs or our amber dummy which is safe for oral use.

Will this necklace solve my baby teething problems on its own?

This necklace is a natural teething aid relief, it will assist with alleviating teething pain and will provide assistance with restlessness, irritability, acidity and drooling.

 How does it work?

The skin's warmth releases healing oils from the amber, a resin, which is absorbed into the bloodstream. What does the amber do? It reduces red inflamed cheeks and stimulates the thyroid glands to reduce drooling. Amber is associated with sunlight and warmth and reputed to boost the immune system, reduce inflammation, accelerates the healing of wounds, reduce inflammation of the throat, ear and stomach infections and respiratory disease. There are no tablets, medications or pastes that can compete with this amber teething necklace, the necklace is unique and has amazing results which are all natural.

 Facts

Amber stores static electricity, named elektron by the ancient Greeks. Elektron evolved into the English

Amber is warm against the skin. In contrast, minerals and glass are heavier and cooler than room temperature. Stones like jade, lapis and turquoise feel cool or even cold to the touch, but amber feels warm. This, along with its obvious sunny colour, is why it is known as “sunshine” to Lithuanians.

True amber is light enough to float in salt water, if not weighed down by other substances (like silver), but it won't float to the top, it floats like soap would in a bathtub. This quality probably helped in its discovery—inhabitants of the Baltic Sea area can still find raw amber washed up on the shore after storms.

In the middle Ages plagues swarmed across towns, taking a heavy toll of the inhabitants. Fumigation with the smoke of burning amber was recommended as an effective preventive measure. As recorded by Matthaus Praetorius, “During the plague not a single amberman from Gdansk, Klaipeda, Konigsberg or Liepaja died of the disease” (1680).

Amber smoke is still used in aromatherapy.

 Who makes them?

Each necklace is handcrafted in Eastern Europe by experienced craftsmen and are made from ancient Baltic Amber and beautifully designed to follow the centuries old European tradition of wearing amber to elevate teething pain.

 Are they safe?

As a safety feature there is a knot before and after each bead, so that even in the extremely unlikely event of the string being torn, no beads are lost and there is no risk of choking, necklaces are secured with a traditional screw clasp, not a sterling silver hook and ring!

 What is amber made from?

Amber is not a stone so therefore warm to the touch, as well as very comfortable and light to wear.

What is the key ingredient in amber?

The Baltic amber-succinite - is fossilised resin produced by plants 40 – 50 million years ago. In nature the resin would have been used by plants as an antibiotic against viruses, a substance healing cuts or a plaster for wound dressing. Now fossilised, its healing properties have been captured and are release once the resin has been warmed by the skin.

What research has been done on Amber?

The active ingredient in Baltic amber is succinic acid, which was analysed by the pioneer of modern bacteriology and Nobel-prize winner Robert Koch (1886). He confirmed its positive influences and discovered that there is no risk of the accumulation of surplus amounts of succinic acid in the human organism. Recent scientific research has also proved that succinic acid has a very positive influence on the human organism, iIt strengthens the body, improves immunity, the course of energy-related processes and the balance of acids. Current research shows that the micronization of amber improves its assimilation by the stress-weakened organism of the contemporary man. The unfavorable environmental conditions prevailing today block the natural flow of energy-related processes in cells. Blocks affect cellular metabolism and significantly weaken the immune system, but the natural energy of amber is able to stimulate its renewal

Where else in nature is succinic acid found?

Succinic acid is found in many contemporary plants and is a common and indispensable food ingredient. However, deficiencies of succinic acid are frequent as it is rather rarely found in nature. Even unripe gooseberries and rhubarb stalks, which are the richest in the acid, contain a thousand times less of the acid that the Baltic amber- succinite.

 Baltic amber vs other amber?

Baltic ambers healing properties are due to its high succinic acid content. Of all types of amber, Baltic amber contains the most succinic acid, which makes it the most valued. Succinic acid is not found in any fossil resins similar to amber. Another reason amber is thought to have healing properties is due to the fact that some samples contain the essence of life (DNA material), dating back millions of years. It is believed that amber facilitates and transmits healing energy and psychic activity.

Why buy Amber from Wonders of the World?

Since the oldest times word "amber" had only one meaning - Baltic amber. However the processes that influenced the formation of amber have left their traces in different parts of the globe because they had an effect on not only resins of coniferous trees, but also on resins of leaf-bearing trees and even leguminous plants. Although 150 types of fossil resins are known in the world, these resins are not amber but its relatives, they are mostly found in Europe and America and each of them have there own name.

Why natural pain relief vs chemicals?

Unlike teething gels or pain relief syrups, the traditional beaded amber necklaces imported from the Baltic region are a less intrusive remedy for the pain and side effects of teething, such as lack of appetite, upset tummies, ear ache, fevers and colds. A natural analgesic, amber will help calm a baby without resorting to drugs which are messy to administer and can wear off whilst sleeping.

Who works with Amber?

Amber's anti-inflammatory and therapeutic properties are also recognised by allopathic medicine. In Austria, Switzerland and Germany amber teething necklaces are sold in local pharmacies as doctors have long known about the healing properties of amber which include calmative, analgesic, anti-fever functions.

How is amber collected?

Even though many methods of amber production have been used throughout history, and those introduced in the last century were very perspective and efficient, collecting of amber pieces from the shore remains the most popular and lasting. Even today amber hunters (about 30 persons) on the shore of the Baltic Sea near Karklė or Melnragė, if the cast of the net is successful, can catch 30-50 kg of amber.

 Who can wear them?

They and are ideal for both girls and boys to wear.

 What sizes are the necklaces?

The necklaces are made with rounded smooth beads (not splintered amber beads which are not suitable as a teething necklace) and the bead size ranges from 2-5mm and measure 33cm in length.

Care of your Amber Jewellery

A few quick guidelines to help keep your new amber in the best condition.

Your new amber is alive. The stones are still breathing & interacting with the environment. The color may change over time—this is expected & contributes to the unique, intensely individual nature of amber. Each piece of amber ages differently. Each is composed of different combinations of plant materials & fossil inclusions. Science has yet to replicate the chemical signature of amber in the laboratory, so amber retains not only beauty, but also a bit of mystery. Amber has retained its beauty for million years and the polished luster can be retained indefinitely, if a few precautions are observed. The softness, brittleness, and susceptibility of amber requires some special care in handling and storing.

Do not put your amber jewelry on before hairspray and perfume is applied, because it will likely create a whitish coating on the amber that may be permanent.

The first precaution is taken by the manufacturer stringing the beads on silk or linen thread with knots between each bead to prevent mutual rubbing and chipping.
Amber jewelry should not be stored where it can rub against metal or other jewelry, and storage in a soft cloth is best.

Never put amber jewelry in an ultrasonic or steam cleaner, which would shatter the gem.

Never let amber come in contact with strong solutions, soaps, detergents, commercial jewelry cleaning solutions, perfume, or hairspray. All of these can dull the finish and/or give a whitish coating.

Keep the amber away from common kitchen substances such as cleansers, salad oil, butter and excessive heat of ovens and burners.

Dust and perspiration can be removed with clean, lukewarm (never hot!) water and a soft flannel cloth.

The amber can be dried and rubbed with clear olive oil, then rubbed with a soft cloth to remove excess oil and restore the polish.

Do not place amber art objects near heating ducts or in direct sunshine.

Displays in lighted showcases should be properly ventilated.

Avoid exposure to sudden changes of temperature, such as hot tubs, very cold water, and reaching into ovens, followed by a cold sink.

Remember never to wear jewelry you value when doing strenuous, physical activity (e.g. gardening).

If you follow these easy guidelines, your amber jewelry will reward you with a lifetime of service & wonder. It will stay just as beautiful as it is the day you see it for the first time.
