What does it mean to heal using energy?

Energy healing is a general term for modalities that are based on the idea that the human body consists of energy fields that can be stimulated through various techniques in order to promote wellness. The concept of energy fields as a vital life force can be traced back to the oldest medical systems and is known as Qi or Chi in China, Ki in Japan, and Prana in India.

Some energy modalities, such as acupuncture and shiatsu, have their roots in ancient medicine, while others, such as EFT, quantum touch, healing hands and reiki, are a relatively modern interpretation of one or more ancient practices. But the underlying basis of all of these is the idea of "energy" flow in the body, through the body and surrounding 'etheric" bodies and in flow with the energy in, around and throughout everything else.

The ancients believed that we breathe in the life force with our air- this was the concept of "prana". It might turn out that the big Question we have all been asking about - Life, God, the Universe and everything is not in fact 42 but that Bob Dylan was right - that the answer is "Blowin' in the Wind".

Quantum Physics terms the notion the "Zero Point Field" a series of microscopic vibrations in the space between things. IT means that everything is connected to everything else in one big sea of energy. Another way of looking at it is that we are all in a sticky 3d web that once we move a little it pulls and tugs on everything else as far away as well, infinity.....

Everything connected to everything else? That there is no actual "matter" nothing physical? We are all just energy fluctuating in and out of perception at the discretion of our own awareness? These are some of the propositions arising from quantum physics that might just explain why our simple alternative healing systems actually work. The space between our healing hands and a persons healing need is not separate.

I believe that keeping the body's energy flowing without hindrance or undue force - a balanced state -is the key to maintaining health. Using a combination of counselling and energy work I seek to help you rebalance energy in the body, by stimulating, unblocking, or dispersing it. The result is a greater sense of energy and wellbeing.

The presence and flow of energy around and within the body has been extolled by ancient cultures, notably the Indian and Chinese, although single-word definitions can't begin to illuminate innate subtle meaning.

The Hindus call it prana and the Chinese call it Qi. While Western science has found no conclusive proof of the organisation of energy systems, bioenergy has been discovered to be vital to pain perception, healing and regeneration. Authorities regard it as belonging to the Universal energy field as well as to the organism; there is connection and flux.

Bioenergy paradigms conceptualise disease as a "disruption" of energy exchange, and "intoxication" of the body, especially through stress. Healing is based on the principle of conducting cosmic energy through the healer, in particular the hands, eyes, thoughts and words. Qi creates order out of chaos as it flows toward the "higher concentration" (unlike entropy, where energy flow is toward dissolution).

In the Chinese system of energy, there are 12 main meridians (circulation channels), while the Hindu system emphasises 7 energy centres called chakras.

As Fred Gallo states in his book "Energy Psychology":

" energy resides at the most fundamental level of being.... if all is essentially energy, it follows that this holds true for the hardware of our nervous system, the neuro-chemistry and even thought and cognition. "
